PROJECT OVERVIEW

Home Counties North is one of a dozen Mail Centres throughout the UK which is used by Royal Mail to consolidate and distribute mail to their final destination. This extensive facility is located in Hemel Hempstead and provides mail services to North London, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, and Northamptonshire. The project formed part of the larger national uplift programme to improve efficiency and sustainability across 18 of their sites. Pentalec was appointed to deliver electrical services in partnership with Volker Fitzpatrick as part of an extensive refurbishment of the building.

SCOPE OF WORKS

  • Upgrade of 800+ light fittings within a live main sorting hall
  • Complete new VESDA System within the main sorting hall
  • New Video Flame Detection System in the loading bay
  • LV distribution to serve re-purposed office areas
  • Lighting and Small Power upgrades
  • Toilet and Shower refurbishments

CHALLENGES

  • Delivering works within a live 24-hour operating mail sorting depot
  • Ensuring zero disruption to Royal Mail employees
  • Guaranteeing a safe system of work for our operatives and customer employees throughout operations
  • Designing a lighting scheme which complied with the strict Lux level requirements of the customer’s working conditions

    • 70% lighting energy savings through the LED lighting upgrade
    • Zero down-time to the Royal Mail operatives
    • Delivering an accident and incident free project
    • Improving the working conditions for the customer’s employees with an elevated working environment through the new lighting scheme
