PROJECT OVERVIEW

North Hertfordshire College is an occupationally focused further education college, delivering full and part-time courses in various sectors such as Social Care, Nursing and Technology. Working with Now Construction, Pentalec were responsible for delivering the Mechanical, Electrical and Public Health services as part of a substantial refurbishment of the building. The key components of the project included the creation of a mock hospital ward, an independent living flat for educating in-home carers, new lecture hall, a bespoke student services and employer’s zone, a fresh science laboratory, and a Virtual Reality classroom.

 

SCOPE OF WORKS

  • Refurbishment, relocation, or replacement of existing Fan Coil Units
  • New supply and extract grilles to suit new the ceilings and associated ductwork modifications
  • MVHR system and associated ventilation ductwork in the Student Services area
  • New Split Air Conditioning systems to provide supplemental cooling
  • Domestic hot and cold water systems and aboveground drainage installations for new sinks in the Mock Ward, Living Flat and Laboratory
  • Installation of over 250x LED panels and downlights including Dali dimming to the VR/Gaming Room
  • New and relocated under floor power system consisting of new floor grommets, floor boxes and desk power modules to suit new furniture layouts
  • High and low-level small power installations to serve AV, security, mechanical power and general small power systems
  • Fire alarm system altered to suit new rooms and ceiling layouts

 

CHALLENGES

  • The project was delivered within a fully operational higher education environment
  • Working to ensure all works were delivered within the client’s strict budget
  • Delivering a fast-track programme to complete works within the college holidays
  • Working across multiple floors concurrently
  • Rigorous health and safety management in a fully occupied building

 

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • We were initially engaged as the M&E specialist to develop the design from RIBA Stage 2, which included 2 weeks’ worth of intrusive validation surveys due to the lack of existing record information. Following a competitive tender exercise, we were appointed as the preferred M&E contractor
  • Developing strong working relationships with NOW Construction
  • Achieving the target completion date and within budget
